Population and Employment in 2016


On March 23, Statistics Korea issued a report on major social indicators in 2016, including data on population and employment.

According to Statistics Korea, in 2016 total population amounted to 51.25 million people. During past several years Korean demographic and social indicators have followed a consistent trend: 1) the ratio of elderly population increased, while the youth and working age populations decreased 2) single person household ratio increased 3) the age at which women had their first child increased 4) youth unemployment increased 5) the female share of the total workforce increased.

Population is estimated to reach its peak in 2031 at 52.96 million people and start decreasing after.

The share of the population under age of 64 ratio is expected to decrease from roughly 87% in 2016 to 60% in 2060.

In 2015, the number of single person households amounted to 5.2 million or 27.2% of total households; up 3.3% points since 2010.

In 2016, the average age at which a woman had her first child increased to 31.4 years old, while fertility rate decreased to 1.17 births per woman.

In 2016, total unemployment increased by 0.1% to 3.7%. Youth unemployment was highest among all age groups at 9.8%.

In 2016, men accounted for 57.6% of the working population, women, 42.4%.
