In response to escalating tensions following India's "Operation Sindoor," 27 airports across India have been shut down for commercial flights until Saturday morning. This decision came shortly after India conducted precision strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan, disrupting air travel in the region with hundreds of flights canceled and significant airspace corridors closed. The closures were implemented shortly after the strikes, which took place around 1.30 am on Wednesday. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued two NOTAMs affecting a total of 27 airports over the course of the day, with the initial warning impacting 18 airports in the early morning and a second notification at 3.20 pm adding nine more airports to the list.
The targets of the military operation included terrorist infrastructure located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, specifically in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 casualties two weeks prior. The operation, named Operation Sindoor, lasted 26 minutes and was characterized by the use of missiles and precision-guided munitions deployed by both aircraft and ground forces. This marked the first military strikes in Pakistan's Punjab province since the 1971 war and heightened bilateral tensions considerably. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri described the operation as measured and responsible, emphasizing that it aimed to deter and prevent further acts of cross-border terrorism.
