India orders power transmission system for upcoming dam on Chenab

Hindustan Times | English | News | May 9, 2025 | UndeterminedEnergy Prices

The Indian government has initiated the establishment of a power transmission system for the 1000 MW Pakal Dul hydroelectric project in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant advancement in the development of the largest dam on the Indian side of the Indus river system. This move follows India's suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in numerous casualties.

The notification for the transmission system was issued just hours before Indian armed forces conducted missile strikes on terrorist targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam attack. New Delhi has announced various punitive measures, such as closure of its airspace to Pakistani flights, the expulsion of many Pakistani nationals, and the cessation of operations at the sole functional land border crossing at Attari.

In conjunction with these measures, Indian officials have stressed that water from the Indus rivers will not be allowed to reach Pakistan. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation has also begun a sediment flushing process in the Salal and Baglihar dams, a procedure not executed since 2008. This operation is intended to enhance water flow downstream, which Pakistan, as a downstream country, will be affected by. India has not communicated these developments to Pakistan, as it no longer recognizes the treaty.
