Arms agency upgrades warship defense system against missiles
Yonhap | English | News | May 9, 2025 | Geopolitical Conflict and Disputes
The state arms procurement agency of South Korea has upgraded a self-defense system for warships to enhance their capabilities against incoming missiles. The Multi Ammunition Softkill System is designed to protect naval vessels from anti-ship missiles by deploying decoys that emit smoke and mimic the signals of the defending ship, as reported by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
Recent upgrades to the system enable it to launch more advanced decoys that more effectively replicate vessels on radar, thereby improving defense against newer anti-ship missiles that feature enhanced target-seeking abilities. This naval defense system was first introduced in 2014, and the upgrades were initiated in response to the advent of sophisticated anti-ship missiles capable of detecting ship-launched decoys.
