Ukraine war impacts spare parts supply for Indian military: Army chief

India's army chief, Gen. Manoj Pande, stated that the ongoing war in Ukraine has adversely affected the supply chain for spare parts essential to India's military. Speaking to reporters, he highlighted the current situation along the border with China as both stable yet unpredictable. This standoff has persisted for nearly two and a half years in the eastern Ladakh region, with continued diplomatic and military discussions between the two nations.
Pande assured that India's military remains well-prepared, mentioning the country has sufficient forces and reserves to handle any potential threats. He noted that challenges regarding the maintenance of weapon systems, particularly in terms of spare parts and ammunition, had been recognized and are actively being addressed. Despite the complications arising from the war in Ukraine, including difficulties in accessing critical defense equipment from Russia, India maintains a strong defensive posture.
India's dependency on Russian defense equipment is significant, with experts estimating that up to 60% of its military assets originate from Russia. Tensions between India and China have escalated since a deadly clash in 2020, which resulted in the loss of lives on both sides. Territorial disputes linger, particularly concerning the Aksai Chin plateau, which India claims as part of Ladakh. Moreover, India's position on the Line of Actual Control emphasizes that any unilateral changes to the border by China will not be tolerated.
